Our Religion School, or Cheder, meets on Sunday mornings during term time, for children aged between 6 and 13 years old. We have a small group of children split into two age groups, of under 10s and those approaching Bar and Bat Mitzvah.
We have two teachers, James Fairman and Laura Caplan, with Rabbi Warren Elf overseeing the curriculum, assemblies and festival celebrations, as well as teaching Hebrew to the older ones when he is available.
We also have a special needs provision and are helping one student who has progressed through our Religion School to prepare for his Bar Mitzvah.
Our main focus in the curriculum is Hebrew reading, basic Hebrew vocabulary, Shabbat, festival celebrations and the Jewish year, Torah and Bible studies and life cycle events. We also look at Israel, the Shoah, Mitzvot (commandments) and prayer.
Children preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah are expected to attend our classes for at least two years before the date of their ceremony.
It is a small and friendly Religion School and children of all members are encouraged to attend. We welcome enquiries about our Religion School. These should be addressed to our Rabbi, Warren Elf, at warren [dot] elf [at] ntlworld [dot] com
